What Your Neighbors Are Saying

RDS has done a great job on our lawn. In just one year we have seen a vast improvement. Knowing that it takes time and a few years of treatment to see the best results, we are very happy with the results so far. Also the pest treatment allows us to be in the yard without the worry of mosquitos and other pests. Highly recommend.

RDS is best in class. I have been using the RDS team for over a decade to treat, aerate and seed my lawn. It takes time, but Aaron's formula for weed control and fertilization has my grass in tip top shape. I would highly recommend RDS to anyone wanting to have the nicest lawn in their neighborhood.

These guys are awesome. Our lawn (and many in our community) look great...like a well manicured golf course. We have had a great experience with them and they have almost repaired the damage that was caused by one of their competitors. They are responsive to concerns and take ownership of their products and procedures. They are a local company and know the soil very well.

Different Grass Types

Warm-Season Grasses

If you wish to have a lawn with warm-season grasses, such as Bermudagrass or St. Augustinegrass, the new seeding process should begin between spring and early summer. Warm-season grasses thrive in warmer temperatures, so you want to make sure you begin laying the seed down at a time of year when the seeds have the best chance of growing. Our technicians will prepare your lawn in a two-step process:

  • Step One – During the first visit, our crew of experts will remove all weeds from the existing turf by spraying them with a safe weed control mixture.
  • Step Two – The second visit will occur after the weeds are dead. This visit will entail dethatching the soil, aerating, seeding, and applying fertilizer to your newly seeded lawn.

Cold-Season Grasses

Some of the most popular grasses in the Charlotte area, such as tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass, are cool-season grasses. Unlike the warm-season grasses, these seeds will perform best if they are planted during fall. Our approach to planting cool-season grasses is a bit different from expected, but we assure you it is the most effective way to get the job done. Our technicians will essentially reverse the previously listed steps in order to properly apply your cool-season grass seed:

  • Step One – On the first visit, we will skip the weed removal process and postpone it until spring. We will proceed with the dethatching, aerating, seeding, and fertilizing during this initial visit.
  • Step Two – We will return in the spring to perform the weed removal service. The cooler temperatures of the fall make it difficult to kill weeds that have gone dormant. Early spring is the perfect time to remove the weeds without hurting your new cool-season grass.

Benefits of Seeding a New Lawn Vs. Laying Sod

Another popular method of creating a lawn is to lay sod on top of your turf. Sodding a lawn is the process of laying down strips of pre-grown grass over the bare soil. These strips come rolled up, with the top of them being covered in grass and the bottom covered in soil. The strips are then rolled out next to one another until the soil is completely covered. Some people prefer this method because it provides instant results, as your new lawn will appear full and green as the strips are rolled out. However, there is no substitute for the longevity and health of your lawn provided by seeding.

Seeding a new lawn has many benefits that sodding can not compete with. Seeds get down into the soil and take root deeper than sod. While sod looks good at first, deeper roots will always mean a healthier lawn, and seeding is the only way to achieve those results. If not installed properly, over time, the strips of sod can begin to shrink, which leaves open gaps in your lawn for weeds to spring up and take control. There are numerous reasons to choose seeding over sodding. Here are just a few more reasons why new lawn seeding is the superior choice:

  • It’s Cheaper – There is a lot that goes into installing strips of sod. The already-existing grass is more expensive than seed, and the process of unrolling the sod is very labor intensive. Installing sod should be done by a professional, and the labor involved will always result in high bills for you.
  • No Thatch – The strips of sod already contain a thin layer of thatch that you lay down over your soil. This thatch brings the possibility of infestation that you may unknowingly lay over your lawn. Starting from scratch with new seeding is the only way to avoid this possibility.
  • More Options – Sodding your lawn means only choosing from the few varieties used to make the sod strips. RDS Lawn Care Services has the best selection of grass seeds in Charlotte and throughout North Carolinas. You can only get that kind of customization with our new lawn seeding service.
