What Your Neighbors Are Saying

RDS is best in class. I have been using the RDS team for over a decade to treat, aerate and seed my lawn. It takes time, but Aaron's formula for weed control and fertilization has my grass in tip top shape. I would highly recommend RDS to anyone wanting to have the nicest lawn in their neighborhood.

- Jason Barger

RDS has done a great job on our lawn. In just one year we have seen a vast improvement. Knowing that it takes time and a few years of treatment to see the best results, we are very happy with the results so far. Also the pest treatment allows us to be in the yard without the worry of mosquitos and other pests. Highly recommend.

- Brad Huffstetler

These guys are awesome. Our lawn (and many in our community) look great...like a well manicured golf course. We have had a great experience with them and they have almost repaired the damage that was caused by one of their competitors. They are responsive to concerns and take ownership of their products and procedures. They are a local company and know the soil very well.

Our Process

RDS Lawn Care’s 7-Step Fertilization Treatment Program

Lawns, like all living things, need proper nutrition and fertilization is the best way to get those nutrients to your lawn. Depending on what kind of grass you have there are three nutrients crucial to your lawn’s health: Nitrogen, Potassium, and Phosphorus. Most lawns in Charlotte, Mt. Holly, and Belmont are either warm or cool-season grasses. For our Fertilization program we will first determine what type of grass you have and then recommend the best 7-step fertilization program for your lawn. We utilize a mixture of both a spray and granular fertilizer. Alongside each of our fertilization treatments, we will be applying weed control in order to get you closer to a weed free lawn.

Round 1 - Date Range: 1/5 - 2/9

  • If you have Fescue turf we will be applying the following:
    • 1/2lb/1000 of a slow release fertilizer will be applied to the lawn during this treatment. This lawn fertilizer will be the base for the early season feeding for up to 30-45 days. We will supplement this throughout the early spring to keep the turf growing consistently.  Fertilizing your lawn will help eliminate the yellowing in the turf that the cooler temperatures cause.
    • We will also spray a weed control to all turf areas that will begin to control those winter weeds that are common during this time of year. It is important to remember that winter weeds are common because we can’t control weeds and grow grass seed in the fall. More weeds will be present, especially in lawns that have a lot of new turf. The treatment we apply during this visit and the next visit will control the weed growth. If we have cold temperatures during the days following this treatment, it will work slowly so don’t expect an immediate weed free lawn. The next visit will take care of any weeds that are remaining as the temperatures will be warmer.
  • If you have Bermuda/Zoysia turf we will be applying the following:
    • Bermuda and Zoysia turf are dormant during this visit, so we will not feed the turf at this time. This is an excellent time to clean out grassy and broadleaf weeds in the turf. We will apply weed control to all turf areas during this visit. Unlike fescue turf, we were able to apply a pre-emergent control in the fall so warm-season turf will have fewer weeds. However, nothing is 100 percent, so this visit is timed to catch any weeds breaking through the pre-emergent weed control products.
  • Watering Instructions: Temperatures below 70 degrees: (Typically November – March)
    • We do not typically recommend using any irrigation at this time. The water that mother nature provides in our area will hold in the soil and give the roots of your turf the water it needs. Over watering during this time will only waste your water and money and encourage poor root development which will work against you when temperatures get hot.

Round 2 - Date Range: 2/10 - 3/22

  • If you have Fescue turf we will be applying the following:
    • 1lb/1000 of Slow Release Fertilizer will be applied to the lawn during this treatment. This fertilizer will be the base for the early growing season feeding for up to 60 days. We will supplement this throughout the summer to keep the turf growing consistently.
    • Pre-emergents will kill any weed seeds in the soil from the previous season. Crabgrass is the most common weed that is prevented in our soils. (This control will last approximately 8-10 weeks. Consistent rainfall will shorten this window.)
    • For weed control, all turf will be sprayed with a herbicide to control any winter weeds that are present and try to keep you closer to a weed free lawn.
  • If you have Bermuda/Zoysia turf we will be applying the following:
    • Pre-emergents will kill any weed seeds in the soil from the previous season. Crabgrass is the most common weed that is prevented in our soils. (This weed control will last approximately 8-10 weeks. Consistent rainfall will shorten this window.)
    • For weed control, all turf will be sprayed with a herbicide to control any winter weeds that are present.
  • Watering Instructions: Temperatures below 70 degrees: (Typically November – March)
    • We do not typically recommend using any irrigation at this time. The water that mother nature provides in our area will hold in the soil and give the roots of your turf the water it needs. Overwatering during this time will only waste your water and money and encourage poor root development which will work against you when temperatures get hot.

Round 3: Date Range 3/22 - 4/30

  • If you have Fescue turf we will be applying the following:
    • 1/2lb/1000 of a slow release Fertilizer will be applied to the lawn during this treatment. This fertilizer will be feed for 45-60 days and be low in nitrogen but will help feed the turf as we enter the stressful season.
    • Soil Conditioner (RGS): We will apply a combination of two organic products Humic Acid and Sea Kelp. These will increase plant rooting and decrease stress and will aid in helping the grass green up, extend our fertilizer release time, and add oxygen to the soil profile. This will aid in the spring green-up and extend our nitrogen release while adding oxygen to the soil profile.
    • Soil Conditioner (Air 8): We will also apply a liquid aeration product. This product naturally aerates the soil by creating micro-fractures in the soil allowing more air, water, and nutrients to get in the soil profile.
For weed control, all weeds will be spot sprayed with a herbicide to control any weed growth that is present.
  • If you have Bermuda/Zoysia turf we will be applying the following:
    • 1lb/1000 of a Granular Slow Release Fertilizer will be applied to the lawn during this treatment. This Fertilizer will be the base for the early growing season and will feed the turf consistently for up to 60 days. We will supplement this throughout the summer to keep the turf growing consistently.
    • For weed control, all weeds will be spot sprayed with a herbicide to control any weed growth that is present.
  • Watering Instructions: Temperatures 70-80 degrees with normal rainfall: (April)
    • Water 2-3 times per week. (A good hard rainfall can substitute for one watering during this time. The soil moisture will determine your schedule during this time.) Do not overwater during this period as it will cause shallow roots which will burn during the hot summer temps!
    • Rotating Irrigation Heads: 25 minutes per zone
    • Fixed Irrigation Heads: 15 minutes per zone
    • Hand Watering/Hose and Sprinkler System: 25-30 minutes per section.

Round 4: Date Range 5/1 - 6/9

  • If you have Fescue turf we will be applying the following in late spring:
    • We will apply the 2nd round of Pre-emergent to your Fescue lawn. The 1st round was applied about 8-10 weeks earlier and the timing of this application will allow your lawn to be more protected from weeds germinated over the next 8-10 weeks.
    • We will lightly feed the lawn and apply a product that helps naturally break down the thatch layer in the lawn. We will also add Humic Acid which will increase the root development, chlorophyll content, nutrient uptake, and improve the soil structure, and water retention.
    • All turf will be spot sprayed with a herbicide to control any weeds that are present.
  • If you have Bermuda/Zoysia turf we will be applying the following in late spring:
    • 1/2lb of Granular Slow Release Fertilizer will be applied to the lawn during this treatment.
    • Pre-emergents will kill any weed seeds in the soil from the previous season. Crabgrass is the most common weed that is prevented in our soils. (This weed control will last approximately 8-10 weeks. Consistent rainfall will shorten this window.)
    • For weed control, all weeds will be spot sprayed with a herbicide to control any weeds that are present.
  • Watering Instructions: Temperatures above 85 degrees with normal rainfall: (Late May – Early September)
    • Water every other day. Try not to water an established lawn daily. The roots of your turf won’t get deep enough, and the turf will stress quickly when temps get above 90 degrees. However, I will warn you that not watering consistently and skipping a week could be detrimental to your turf.
    • Rotating Irrigation Heads: 25 minutes per zone
    • Fixed Irrigation Heads: 15 minutes per zone
    • Hand Watering/Hose and Sprinkler System: 25-30 minutes per section.

Round 5: Date Range 6/10 - 7/19

  • If you have Fescue turf we will be applying the following:
    • We will apply iron to all turf areas. Iron will relieve stress and give nutrients to the turf during the heat and drought conditions that we typically see during this time of year.
    • For weed control, all weeds will be spot sprayed with a herbicide to control any weeds that are present.
  • If you have Bermuda/Zoysia turf we will be applying the following:
    • 1/2lb of Granular Slow Release Fertilizer (26-0-0) will be applied to the lawn during this treatment.
    • Soil Conditioner (Dethach): We apply a combination of Humic Acids, Molasses, and Yeast Blends which will compost the thatch layer in at the soils surface
    • Hand Watering/Hose and Sprinkler System: 25-30 minutes per section

Round 6: Date Range 7/20 - 8/28

  • If you have Fescue turf we will be applying the following:
    • We will apply 8-10-20 granular slow release fertilizer to all turf areas during this visit. This blend will help your lawn handle the stress of summer heat, help with root development, added green color, and the additional phosphorous and potassium will be beneficial for the fall seeding coming up.
    • For weed control, all weeds will be spot sprayed with a herbicide to control any weeds that are present.
  • If you have Bermuda/Zoysia turf we will be applying the following:
    • A controlled release liquid nitrogen plus micro-nutrients that are beneficial for the soil will be applied to the lawn during this treatment.
    • The first fall pre-emergent will be applied to all turf areas for weed control. This will ensure that the winter weeds will be prevented as the cooler weather approaches.
    • For weed control, all weeds will be spot sprayed with a herbicide to control any  broadleaf weeds that are present.

Round 7: Date Range 11/1 - 12/15

  • If you have Fescue turf we will be applying the following:
    • We will apply 24-5-11 granular fertilizer to all turf areas during this visit. This blend will help your lawn develop a deep and healthy root system, added green color, and the additional potassium will help the turf avoid damage that cold temperature could bring.
    • During this time we are not applying any herbicides to the lawn. We realize that weeds may be present but the new seed applied in the fall needs more time to germinate and develop before it can withstand herbicides.
  • If you have Bermuda/Zoysia turf we will be applying the following:
    • The Second fall pre-emergent will be applied to all turf areas for weed control. This will ensure that the winter weeds will be prevented as the cooler weather approaches.
    • For weed control, all warm season turf will be sprayed with a herbicide to control any broadleaf weeds that are present.
    • If you have recently had fescue seed put on your lawn in the past 10-20 days make sure you keep the soil damp until that seed germinates.
